Evidence-Based Design
/

“The synchronization of virtual reality design with physiological responses allows researchers to see the direct relationship between individual features of a building and how those features affect the people that use those spaces.”

Eduardo Macagno, PhD, UCSD Division of Biological Sciences

We’re putting the evidence in evidence-based design. By bringing a research-based approach to the art of architecture, designers can learn about the architect’s most discerning critic—the human brain.

It’s not just the stuff of science fiction movies anymore. In 2009, HMC Architects entered into a joint research initiative with the University of California, San Diego, to develop software and technologies that objectively measure human responses as subjects interact with full-scale, 3D, virtual reality building models. This groundbreaking research seeks to demonstrate how evidence-based design can become a method for creating buildings that may save lives and money or improve learning outcomes.
