Patient-Centered Care Reflected in Design
/ / Kaiser Downey Medical Center > Downey, CA

The Kaiser Downey Medical Center set out to bring a new level of healthcare to the community. As with any project, balancing the scope, schedule, and budget with the needs of the community helped to define success for the new facility.

Among the most notable achievements of the project was the ability to integrate flexibility in design, address user needs, and respect budget constraints while utilizing Kaiser’s template building system.

The design required a clear wayfinding system to integrate the new facility with existing medical office buildings on the adjacent site. The concept of a concourse was created; a covered pathway that runs along the spine of the site. The spine serves as an organizing element off of which publicly accessed departments—such as emergency, information, admitting, and outpatient labs— are located. This design unifies the site, providing distinct wayfinding and organizing the campus around a patient’s needs.
