A Flexible Medical Office Meeting Unique Challenges
/ / Kaiser Downey Medical Office Building > Downey, CA
While working within the confines of an existing building template and standards, HMC met the challenge of creating an aesthetic that supported operational goals by the shift of surface planes, and creative use of color and materials.
The team maintained flexibility in the structural design by defining “bays” that would accommodate a variety of types of Kaiser department templates.
The design goal met four unique challenges. First, to incorporate sustainable design features into the building while adhering to Kaiser’s building guidelines. Second, to accommodate future changes through design flexibility of the space. Third, to increase patient safety. Finally, to provide simplified exterior and interior means of wayfinding for patients who may be in a heightened state of anxiety. Sustainable features include use of reclaimed water for irrigation, cool roof, and storm water collection basins.
