A Patient-Centered Approach to Design
/ / Torrance Memorial Medical Center > Torrance, CA
Physicians, administrators, support staff and members of the community contributed to a diverse and collaborative planning team to help realize the vision of a new hospital for the 21st century.
The seven-story, 370,000-SF replacement tower includes a basement and penthouse, and connects to the existing facility by way of a 15,000-SF tunnel at the first and second floors, offering views to a healing garden.
Design teams focused on patient care, being mindful of the comfort of visiting family members. Family-friendly lounges and overnight spaces were added, as well as a healing garden and chapel. Gently curved nurses’ stations allow for better care and visibility of patient rooms. The entrance of the new tower, positioned at the end of a bustling outdoor plaza, opens to a bright and open lobby. An indoor-outdoor cafeteria, gift shop, admittance services, and a spiritual place are all easily accessible on the first floor.
