Building Embraces Landscaped Plaza

From Industrial Warehouse to State-of-the-Art Academic Complex
/ / Azusa Pacific University Duke Academic Complex > Azusa, CA

What started as a 70,000-SF high-bay, tilt-up warehouse was transformed into a modern-day, state-of-the-art academic complex— complete with a graduate school, library, and home to several academic departments.

The project faced many unique challenges from the start, including converting the existing industrial warehouse into a two-story academic environment.

By adding a second floor to the space, the square footage doubled, giving way for a courtyard enclosed by a glass curtain wall. The new courtyard houses a fountain, landscaping, sculpture garden, and snack bar with outdoor seating. The industrial character of the original building was maintained by exposing the steel and gluelam structure. The wire mesh ceiling grid, perforated metal art display panels, and the use of cast-in-place concrete reinforce the character.
