Covered Collonade and Entry Act as a Gateway

A Unique Design for a High School on an Urban University Campus
/ / California Academy of Mathematics & Science at CSU > Dominguez Hills, CA

The California Academy of Mathematics and Science (CAMS) is a unique public high school located on the campus of CSU Dominguez Hills, giving CAMS students access to the university’s support facilities.

HMC’s challenge was to integrate CAMS into the existing University campus, while preserving its individual character as a high school.

The 30,000-SF project is located at the south end of the University’s promenade, creating an engaging destination and gateway to the entire college campus. Organized around a courtyard, the administration building at its northern edge and three classroom pods at the south are linked by a covered colonnade, establishing the desired sense of community. Smaller exterior courtyards, doubling as outdoor learning spaces, are created between classroom pods.
