Student Center: Brick Materiality Relates to the Existing Campus and Invites Participation

Merging Student Learning and Sustainability into the Community
/ / Mt San Antonio College Learning Resource Center > Walnut, CA

By merging research, study, and activity spaces that create a central, multifunctional complex, the Learning Resource Center (LRC) connects the academic and social pursuits of the students, faculty, and surrounding community at Mt SAC.

The 200,000-SF LRC includes a library, meeting center, study rooms, bookstore, convenience store, dining, and activity room, making the complex a community resource, as well as a student center.

Designed as a prominent landmark on the hillside campus, the LRC serves as a visual reference for students and the surrounding community, while green roofs not only insulate the building, but blend it with the topography. Circulation, study rooms, and the layout of each floor are visible from every level within the three-story atrium and provide clear views to the campus. The transparency of the library promotes the open flow of knowledge and information while preserving private space for study and research.
