The Marketplace of Ideas Explored Through Design
/ / Mt San Antonio College Learning Resource Center > Walnut, CA
As an information intersection at the center of this hillside campus, the Learning Resource Center embodies the free flow of knowledge through the visual and physical links between spaces and provides easy access to its integrated technology.
The interior materials palette is flexible, allowing spaces to be compatible with the ways students share information: quiet study, collaborative groups, social gathering, and accessible technology.
Transparency is a central design characteristic, which the paths of travel emphasize. The monumental stair in the atrium links all levels, resulting in open floor plan that is clearly visible. Core service elements form a ‘box’ wrapped in wooden laths, making it a useful orientation point. Glass-walled bridges connect the library to the student center, and the public reading room opens to the courtyard, providing easy access to the bookstore, cafe, and student government offices.
