Transforming a Historical Theatre into a Functional, Modern Design Studio
/ / Pasadena Design Studio > Pasadena, CA
Located within the landmark 1917 State Theater, the challenge was to create an open and efficient workspace around the two distinct structural systems; masonry bearing walls and bowstring trusses.
The finished environment celebrates the building’s original construction and structural systems, which function as a teaching and learning laboratory for the client's staff and guests.
An organizing wall of metal studs defines the path from the entry through the workspace and culminates in an employee kitchen, dining, and library area. The wall’s semi-open surface allows a visual connection of space, light, and sound. Sustainable features include skylights, renewable bamboo flooring, MDF fiberboard, and linoleum flooring utilized as pinup surfaces. Reconfigurable elements, such as the casework and translucent sliding door panels, are a few details that create a flexible and interactive work environment.
