Lobby Seating Area is Filled with a Variety of Welcoming Seating Options

Healing Through Design
/ / Torrance Memorial Medical Center > Torrance, CA

From the healing garden and spiritual space to the patient rooms, the design of this seven-story hospital tower strikes a healing balance between privacy and observation, relaxation and treatment, cool materials, and warm tones.

A sense of environmental harmony begins in the welcoming waiting area, filled with a variety of seating options, wood and glass elements, and views to calming outdoor spaces.

The design of the tower responds directly to the program of each patient floor. The exterior curve of floors three and four maintains sight lines along a corridor punctuated by distributed nursing stations. Each patient room is divided into functional zones, allowing hospital staff, patients, and visitors to coexist in the space without disrupting care. At the reconfigurable headwall, panels reduce the visual impact of equipment, large glass windows admit light and views, and careful color selection evokes warmth and safety.
