Transforming the Library into Modern Bookstore
/ / County of Riverside Woodcrest Library > Riverside, CA

Challenged to bring excitement and life back to the community library, the design team set out to research what makes modern bookstores so popular with the public and to incorporate those features into the new library design.

Exploring lighting, materials, furnishings, and spatial relationships, the team created a warm, bright, user-friendly interior that encourages lingering visits.

In addition to housing 30,000 volumes, the library includes a whimsical children’s area, spaces for young adult tutoring, public meeting rooms, and staff support offices. Inspired by the history of the region, the new library is a contemporary interpretation of Craftsman architecture; exposed wood beams and ceilings, stacked stone walls, natural slate flooring, and bluestone countertops extend the natural landscape indoors. Smaller, intimate spaces are created for reading, reflection, or longer study sessions.
