Learning Villages Promote Interaction and Gathering; Photography by Tom Bonner

Learning Villages that Facilitate Discovery
/ / Alvord USD Phillip M. Stokoe Elementary School > Riverside, CA

The Innovative Learning Center is exactly what its name implies: an environment that encourages imagination to improve student achievement—from pre-school through grade six—and serves as a collaborative model to increase quality of education.

With an elementary school, pre-K programs, teaching tools, community green space, cultural centers, and gathering areas, the Innovative Learning Center provides community support year-round.

Six distinct environments—all California native ecosystems—weave among the six learning villages, immersing students in an educational experience throughout the day. Open circulation invites imaginative interpretation and promotes interaction as students encounter learning elements on walls, walkway patterns, and seating areas. It embodies the philosophy of multiple educational components working together to benefit an entire society, and remains flexible to accommodate a growing population.
