Modernization and Expansion for the 21st Century
/ / Burbank USD John Burroughs High School > Burbank, CA

The growth of the student population and the need to modernize the facilities led the District to expand the campus for 2,700 high school students and create an appropriate learning environment for the 21st century.

Through well-planned phasing, the project—originally designed as a junior high in the 1920s—improves the appearance and functionality of the school and incorporates sustainable design features.

In the past 35 years, the school saw no significant renovation until now. The project was implemented in two phases. Phase one demolished several existing buildings and constructed three new buildings: a three-story classroom building, a one-story multipurpose kitchen, and a new gymnasium and swim facility. The second phase modernized the remaining buildings and created a new, central courtyard within the campus. Phased construction ensured that the school remained operational during the project.
