Event Board is Incorporated onto the Form of the Black Box Theater

Enhancing Creativity Through Collaborative, Flexible Spaces
/ / Los Angeles County High School for the Arts > Los Angeles, CA

Located at the northern edge of the CSU Los Angeles campus, the collaboration, process, and spirit of making art—along with the flexibility and efficient use of space—characterize the school's design.

A simple, repetitive, braced-frame steel structure, few load-bearing internal walls, and aesthetically utilitarian classroom and studio interiors allow for future adjustment to the building usage.

The top level of the building is entirely composed of the black box theater, which is the single largest part of the program and its most public function. Dramatic lighting transforms the box into the nighttime spectacle of a performance or gallery space. A large event board is incorporated on the northern wall of the black box facing the public entry road. Like a billboard, this display changes periodically to showcase student work and reflect events and productions.
