Bell Tower Signifies Entry to Campus and Acts as a Point of Reference

Reflecting Historic Concepts to Create a Community Landmark
/ / Riverside USD Patricia Beatty Elementary School > Riverside, CA

Attitudes toward structure and massing, material and texture, and language and landscape influenced a fresh interpretation of historical concepts and building methods to result in this 21st century educational environment.

Inspired by Riverside's Mission and Craftsman-style architectural history, this elementary school is designed for 748 students.

Exposed structure, covered walkways, horizontal lines, and the use of terra cotta are a few recognizable characteristics that add to the depth and identity of the Mission and Craftsman styles. A small grove of citrus trees references the area’s agricultural history, while multiple courtyards represent Mission-style strategies. A nearly 30-foot high bell tower establishes a reference point from anywhere on campus, and large extruded window frames serve to punctuate important areas of the school.
