Inviting Interaction and Shared Uses Between Two Campuses
/ / Placentia-Yorba Linda USD Kraemer Middle School and Valencia High School Modernizations > Placentia, CA
The modernizations and new additions protect, enhance, and reinforce the campus architecture, giving the middle school and high school a fresh, updated look that supports the educational program of Placentia-Yorba Linda USD.
Kraemer MS and Valencia HS are linked campuses that share a common property line. The challenge was to connect the two schools through architecture, materiality, landscape, and paving.
The modernizations support the needs of the surrounding community through a performance lawn, stadium, and the performing arts addition. The budget was maximized by re-using existing structures; the new administration lobby was created by incorporating a breezeway that was part of the original building design, but was not in use. Existing brick walls and columns were utilized to form the edges of the new public administration entry space, while maintaining the existing architectural vocabulary.
