An Academic Oasis in an Urban Setting
/ / Los Angeles USD Frida Kahlo High School > Los Angeles, CA
The issue of security—a primary concern—conflicts with the desire to create an open and welcoming environment. The solution was to conceive an education complex as “double-sided.”
The campus is designed to provide a protected, softer learning oasis for students amidst a densely populated urban sprawl, and to create an environment that supports personalized learning.
The exterior of the facility is a tough shell, with layers that envelop and protect the interior campus. Smaller scaled elements are loosely arranged around a landscaped arroyo that carves through the interior and organizes the various levels and informal circulation paths. The large, multi-storied academic building required a minimal footprint, maximizing open space for play fields and a quad for social interaction. Small learning communities accommodate a variety of instructional delivery methods.
