Weaving Together a Town Center
/ / Solana Beach SD Solana Pacific Elementary School > San Diego, CA
Located in the heart of the “town center” of Carmel Valley, Solana Pacific Elementary School represents an architecture that is civic in nature, yet scalable as an elementary school.
The school has two sides; the quieter public side that celebrates the urban quality of the school and the active side that opens to sunshine, gardens, play areas, and outdoor classrooms.
To maximize the site and simplify the building form, the two-story school is composed of groupings of four standardized classrooms to form nine small learning communities. The one-story administration wing includes a library/media center, computer laboratory, music classroom, and theater. The heart of the school is the circular reading room and is the focal point for the campus. Public pathways along the perimeter were maintained, while seating areas for outdoor classrooms and community resting areas were added.
