Two principals have joined HMC Architects’ office in metropolitan Phoenix. David De Valeria, AIA, LEED AP, has joined the firm as design principal in the firm’s Tempe, Ariz., office, while Erik Hanson has been hired as principal in charge of the same office. Both principals will lead business development efforts and projects taking place in Arizona, while contributing to ongoing projects in multiple markets across the firm.

Hired as design principal, David De Valeria joins HMC after serving as vice president and director of design of the Phoenix office of a national design firm. With more than 30 years of architectural design experience, De Valeria has designed healthcare, commercial, science, education, and civic projects. Most recently, he served on a task force for a new downtown Phoenix campus for Arizona State University. His portfolio also includes the Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Pakistan Military Hospital in Peshwar Province, Pakistan; and the Mayo Hospital Cafeteria Addition and Wellness Garden in Phoenix.

His work as planner and designer has been exhibited worldwide, including at the Belgian Biennale, New York’s Storefront for Art and Architecture, and the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. De Valeria is a graduate of the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

Erik Hanson brings 19 years of experience designing and managing projects in healthcare, corporate, and civic design. His portfolio includes projects such as the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust in Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom; Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Laboratory, and Student Residence in Boston; and Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, University of Chicago Hospitals in Chicago. Locally, Hanson contributed to the Flagstaff Medical Center Comprehensive Master Plan, Flagstaff, Ariz.; and the CHW Mercy Gilbert Medical Center Phase 2, Gilbert, Ariz.

Hanson obtained a Bachelor of Architecture from Boston Architectural Center, and studied visual and environmental arts at Minneapolis College of Art & Design. He is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects, serves on Urban Land Institute’s National Healthcare and Life Science Council, and also belongs to the Boston Society of Architects. He previously worked for a national design firm in Phoenix as vice president and managing principal, and also at the Phoenix office of a national healthcare design firm as senior design architect and project manager. Hanson was a founding principal of oceanUS, a progressive, multidisciplinary design firm providing architectural, interior and product design services.

Both principals reside in the Phoenix-metro area and will be based in the firm’s local office, located at 60 East Rio Salado Parkway, Suite 9018; Tempe, Ariz.
