HMC Architects is thrilled to announce the appointment of Karen Compton, founder and principal of A3K Consulting, Inc., to our Board of Directors. With over 25 years of experience in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, Karen brings a wealth of expertise in strategic planning, operational development, and driving business growth aligned with mission-based objectives. Her leadership at A3K Consulting has helped clients achieve transformative outcomes by aligning their organizational goals with a solid strategic framework.
Karen’s passion for long-term business sustainability is deeply rooted in architecture and the role of belonging and inclusion in developing community-centered design. Karen was an adjunct lecturer at California Baptist University’s School of Architecture, teaching professional practice. As the executive producer and co-host of the podcast Breaking the Silence of Design, she has contributed significantly to conversations around equity in the design and construction professions. A contributing author of the 15th edition of The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice, Karen has authored over 100 articles on the business aspects of architecture, underscoring her commitment to advancing the field in business and governance.
Karen’s decision to join HMC’s board represents a “full circle” moment. She was inspired by her connection to HMC’s former President, Robert Kain, FAIA, and his dedication to the firm’s Design for Good ethos. Reflecting on Kain’s philosophy, Karen shared, “At its most fundamental core, design can be and is healing, educating, enriching, and for everyone.” This alignment with HMC’s purpose of accessible, community-centered design fuels her excitement for contributing to our firm’s growth and innovation.
As the AEC industry faces complex challenges—from the rise of technology to workforce shifts—Karen’s strategic insight will be invaluable. She aims to support HMC by “asking the harder questions” and fostering sustainability, growth, and resilience strategies. Her approach to leadership, emphasizing empowerment and collaboration, aligns seamlessly with our mission to make a lasting positive impact through design.
We look forward to Karen’s contributions as we continue our journey to deliver designs that heal, educate, and enrich communities everywhere.
