A new era for agricultural career and technical education began with the unveiling of the new Agriculture CTE Building at Merrill F. West High School in Tracy, California. Tracy Unified School District welcomed district leaders, faculty and staff, community members, and the HMC Architects design team to celebrate the milestone achievement and the opportunities it will create for students. Reflecting the hands-on nature of the program, the district’s director of CTE & Adult Education crafted a steel ribbon that was ceremonially cut with a torch, providing a memorable and fitting opening for the facility. 

The new 9,700 SF facility will redefine the school’s Agriculture CTE program, providing students with hands-on access to industry-grade equipment and learning environments. The space features sixteen welding booths equipped with multi-process machines capable of GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW (Stick), FCAW (Flux-Core), and dedicated oxygen-acetylene gas welding systems. Students will also gain experience using lathes, mills, drill presses, and a full range of professional metal fabrication equipment. Designed to support large-scale projects, the facility includes a three-ton overhead crane, heavy-duty storage systems, and an outdoor work area seamlessly connected to the interior through oversized roll-up doors. 

The building reflects the district’s, high school’s, and the community’s goals for the facility. This influence can be seen in design of building, the branding of exterior and classroom spaces, the equipment selected, and the way this new building connects the agricultural program to the rest of the campus.
