On March 12, HMC President and Civic/Justice Practice Leader Beverly Prior, FAIA is presenting “Justice in the Next Epoch” at AIA San Francisco. Beverly will address how we are living in a time of disruptive change—our reality today includes global warming, water and food shortages, and worsening economic disparities. We’re shifting from a time of unrestricted growth to a time of limitations, which demand new behaviors and new solutions. The criminal justice system, much like our health care, education and political systems, is under stress.

In 1981, Jonas Salk, biologist and humanitarian (Salk Institute/polio vaccine), wrote World Population and Human Values: A New Reality, a provocative, recently-rediscovered piece that provides a framework for new meaning and new hope in the new epoch, one that makes sense of the disruption we are currently experiencing.

Beverly’s presentation will be a thought piece that is intended to trigger engagement from attendees as they use the Salk framework as a launching pad for new thinking about the justice system in the context of society, the community, the facility and the individual.
