Artificial intelligence, robotics, telepresence, predictive analytics, and intelligent building systems are beginning to reshape the delivery of healthcare. For organizations planning facilities that will remain in service for decades, the challenge is not predicting every technological advancement. It is creating environments that can adapt as technologies and care models evolve.

In a recent article for Medical Construction & Design, HMC Architects’ President Kirk Rose, AIA, DBIA, shares five considerations for preparing healthcare facilities for a future shaped by rapidly advancing technology.

Technology can support the human side of care
Trust, empathy, intuition, and clinical judgment remain central to healing. Technology can strengthen those human connections by automating routine tasks, improving coordination, and reducing operational burdens. Robotics, for example, can support materials management, supply delivery, and waste removal, giving caregivers more time to focus on patients.

Because adoption will vary among healthcare organizations, facilities should be able to accommodate different technologies without depending on a single vision of the future.

Familiar spaces will gain new capabilities
Many technological advancements may not require dramatic changes to the physical environment. Patient rooms can support telepresence and remote consultations through stronger connectivity, cameras, media displays, and low-voltage infrastructure, while remaining familiar and patient-centered.

Operating rooms offer a similar lesson. Earlier generations of surgical robots required larger spaces, but newer systems have become smaller and more efficient. Greater technological capability does not necessarily require a larger footprint.

Flexibility is more valuable than prediction
Healthcare buildings take years to design and construct, while technologies can change within months. Scenario-based planning allows project teams to consider possible futures without overcommitting to equipment or systems that may become outdated.

Instead of widening every corridor to accommodate autonomous delivery systems, a hospital might, for example, incorporate small alcoves where robots can pause or recharge. Strategic, flexible interventions can often provide more long-term value than extensive physical changes.

Data is essential infrastructure
Bandwidth, redundancy, cloud storage, and resilient communications systems have become as critical to healthcare operations as electricity, water, HVAC, and medical gases. Facilities should support increasingly connected care while remaining prepared for outages, emergencies, and future digital demands.

Intelligent building systems can also monitor performance, anticipate maintenance needs, and optimize energy use. Much of this technology may remain invisible to patients while quietly improving reliability and efficiency.

The future may feel surprisingly familiar
Some of healthcare’s most consequential technologies may operate behind the scenes. Predictive systems can improve patient flow, sensors and robotics can manage supplies, and telepresence can expand access to specialists and families without fundamentally changing how patients experience care.

By prioritizing flexibility over certainty, healthcare organizations can create resilient facilities that incorporate new technologies while preserving the human relationships at the center of healing.
