HMC Architects’ Director of Healthcare Design George Vangelatos, AIA, DBIA, LEED AP, BD+C, EDAC has successfully completed the Design-Build Institute of America’s (DBIA) comprehensive education, training, and certification testing program to achieve the design-build industry’s designation as a nationally certified Design-Build Professional.

Vangelatos is recognized for his knowledge of medical planning, designing complex healthcare projects, and Lean and Integrated Project Delivery experience. He is an award-winning architect with national and international experience and has developed expertise in the application of Lean strategies, decision-making processes, and performance-based designing. He has been a catalyst for design excellence, planning innovations, and cross-pollination of holistic approaches to design; shaping how thousands of people receive care around the world.

“One key advantage of design-build delivery is that construction and design teams are working together throughout the process, reducing wasted efforts and creating a shared ownership of both the design and construction of a project,” said Vangelatos. “Speaking as a designer, when making key design decisions, working side-by-side with experts in building and construction makes for better informed and durable decisions and in many cases, adds value to the project overall. DBIA promotes collaboration and a true team approach to project delivery. Many of our construction and management teammates are vested in DBIA and its philosophy and I felt pursuing my own certification would help me to better understand the intra-team dynamics and be a better teammate.”

The DBIA is a membership organization founded to advocate and advance single-source project delivery within the design and construction community. The design-build method of project delivery embraces architecture, engineering, and construction services under a single contract, thereby re-integrating the roles of designer and constructor. In addition to public- and private-sector project owners, DBIA members include practitioners from all project phases.
