A new firm-wide strategy prioritizes sustainable operations, innovative design, and industry advocacy.

HMC Architects is proud to announce the launch of its 2025-2030 Sustainability Action Plan, a bold and comprehensive roadmap designed to drive sustainability across our operations, projects, and advocacy efforts.

A Commitment to Meaningful Change

The plan is built around three core pillars:

  • Operations and Partnerships – How we operate and collaborate with like-minded industry partners.
  • Architecture and Design – How we integrate sustainability into every project to reduce environmental impact.
  • Education and Outreach – How we engage with the industry and communities to advance sustainability knowledge and action.

At HMC, sustainability is not an afterthought—it is fundamental to our Design for Good ethos, said Brian Staton, president and CEO of HMC. This plan sets forth actionable steps to make a measurable difference in our projects, our firm, and the broader industry.

Key Initiatives Driving Sustainability Forward

HMC’s plan includes tangible actions that will help shape a more sustainable future:

  • Corporate Carbon Footprint Reporting – Annual tracking of Scope 1, 2, and select Scope 3 emissions.
  • AIA 2030 Commitment – Advancing net-zero energy and carbon reduction goals.
  • Materials Pledge – Thoughtful specification of products that prioritize human and environmental health.
  • Sustainable Operations Policies – Standardizing firm-wide policies on purchasing, waste management, and energy efficiency.
  • Advocacy and Outreach – Expanding HMC’s role in shaping sustainability policy and industry education.

“The Sustainability Action Plan reflects our belief that architecture has the power to reduce environmental harm and restore and enhance ecosystems and communities,” said Jennifer Wehling, director of sustainability at HMC. “We’re not just designing buildings—we’re designing a better future.”
