HMC Architects is pleased to announce the addition of Tim Hurvitz, AIA, LEED AP, as healthcare principal in charge. With more than two decades of experience designing, building, and renovating healthcare facilities across California, Hurvitz brings deep expertise in creating environments that support patients during life’s most challenging moments. In his new role, he will lead projects from concept through completion, collaborating closely with clients, caregivers, and project teams to deliver innovative, efficient, and healing spaces.
Hurvitz’s portfolio spans complex inpatient renovations, outpatient facilities, and large-scale master plans, with specialized expertise in Lean design and HCAI/OSHPD projects. He has led multinational teams, presented at industry conferences, and excels at guiding projects through all phases of design and construction. Known for his collaborative approach, he thrives on learning from caregivers, seeking innovations that improve efficiency and elevate the patient experience. His work is rooted in empathy and the profound responsibility of designing spaces that heal.
Born and raised outside of Boston, Hurvitz earned his architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati, where he also studied vernacular and Native American architecture in Arizona and New Mexico. His early career began in San Diego at Moon Mayoras Architects, where he was introduced to hospital architecture—and even observed medical procedures, including a stent placement—that solidified his passion for the field.
“Hospitals are complex, high-stakes environments, and they deserve design solutions as thoughtful as the care being provided inside them,” said Hurvitz. “My focus is always on listening to caregivers, understanding their workflows, and creating spaces that work for both the body and the spirit. That’s why HMC’s Design for Good ethos resonates so deeply with me—we’re not just designing buildings, we’re creating environments that actively improve care, uplift communities, and make a lasting positive impact.”
“Tim brings a rare combination of technical expertise, design innovation, and a deep respect for the human side of healthcare,” said Daniel Perschbacher, healthcare practice leader at HMC. “His leadership will help our clients create facilities that not only meet complex regulatory demands but also foster healing, efficiency, and adaptability for the future of care.”
Throughout his career, Hurvitz has earned a reputation as a trusted partner to hospital leadership teams, adept at navigating the technical, regulatory, and human complexities of healthcare design. “HMC’s reputation in healthcare design is second to none, and I’m excited to contribute to a team that’s pushing innovation while keeping patient care at the forefront,” he said. “We’re at a point where technology, sustainability, and patient-centered design are converging in ways we’ve never seen before. I look forward to helping clients navigate this new era—delivering facilities that are flexible, efficient, and ready for the future of care.”
