HMC Architects was selected to design Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center’s new adolescent behavioral health unit addition project in Los Angeles, California. The $17.7 million, 19,500 SF project expands the number of patient beds at Gateways Hospital from 55 beds to 92 in a new two-story HCAI 5 building to support the growing needs of the area’s adolescent population.

HMC’s mission focuses on opportunities to directly contribute to communities. As one of only 31 freestanding psychiatric acute care hospitals in California, Gateways provides crucial services to highly vulnerable adolescents and specializes in mental and behavioral health services for the most disadvantaged populations, including homeless patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center has served the Echo Park neighborhood and Los Angeles County with life-altering treatment and care for nearly seven decades. As the only mental health facility of its kind in Los Angeles County, it is a distinct and unique client, that deserves an equally special and compassionate design team.

Design began in June and the project will be complete in December 2026.
