Noah Kelly, Design Technology Manager, Sacramento
Years at HMC // 4 years total. (3 years + 1 year break + 1 year back)
Memorable Projects //
Designing the Davis Joint Unified School District Davis Senior High School All Student Center.
Extracurriculars //
I’m currently all booked up designing/remodeling our first home and studying for the ARE’s, but whenever I have a break from those things I love Cycling, Playing tennis with my wife Ashley, and generally doing anything outdoorsy; the farther away from technology I can be the better (ironic maybe?)
Favorite Architect + why //
That is a tough one and would probably change depending on the day you ask. Today I would say Thom Mayne – I’ve always been a fan of Thom Mayne’s work, not because I think all his work is successful, but because I think it helps to create a discourse on what architecture can be, and helps questions those norms we all hold – often too tightly. Some other Architects/Firms I look up to are Foster + Partners, Shop Architects, Steven Holl, and Olson Kundig to name a few.
If I weren’t a Design Technology Manager I’d be //
A Lighting Designer or Cyclist
Favorite TV show //
Chuck
First Job //
Shop Technician for Mailroom Dynamics – I built some of the largest mail inserting machines in the world.
Most recent book I read //
The Allure of Gentleness – Dallas Willard
Noah hosts a series of YouTube live streams that offer a peek into his everyday working life as a Design Technology Manager. He has been working through the initial stages of designing and building an environmental dashboard using Rhino 6 and Grasshopper. The dashboard will be a tool to help the designers at HMC Architects make informed decisions at the earliest stages of a project, relating to environmental impact, ultimately achieving more sustainable future buildings. See the first video in the series below, then visit our YouTube channel to follow along with Noah.
