The San Mateo-Foster City School District dedicated a new multi-purpose building on the Parkside Montessori campus in San Mateo, just south of San Francisco. This contemporary, flexible $13 million facility, designed by HMC Architects, was successfully delivered as part of the district’s 2024 Measure T bond program.

The new MPR accommodates a growing student body at the TK-8 Montessori magnet school and is strategically located to better connect various areas of the campus, fostering a more unified environment. The improved campus layout ensures easy access and a central hub for students and staff.
HMC utilized digital climate modelling tools to optimize the building layout for wind and sun orientation, natural light, and ventilation. Large openings on the north side connect the interior with a gathering area—foldable walls can be opened to seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces. Warm wood tones are used throughout the building to create a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere.
Centrally located lunch shelters can be used for a variety of activities, and the play structure has been relocated to improve efficiency and organization, enhancing visibility of the athletic fields and supporting outdoor activities. A protective canopy connects outdoor spaces and provides shelter over entry doors. Playful elements were included in the landscape design to encourage exploration and interaction with nature, offering ample opportunities for outdoor learning.
Attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony from the district were Superintendent Diego Ochoa, Chief Business Officer Patrick Gaffney, Director of Facilities Amy Ruffo, District Project Managers Bob Price, Mark Sherrill, and Melany Rozani. Joining from HMC Architects were PreK-12 Practice Leader Brian Meyers, Principal Architect Marko Blagojevic, and Senior Construction Administrator Alex Seefeldt.
