Designed as a “choose your own adventure” storybook, patients are engaged by beautiful artwork and characters from the moment they enter the building. Each patient deemed an explorer, encounters a delightful cast of characters and a supportive companion to navigate their adventure, fostering a sense of triumph over obstacles. The floor plan is divided into two sections for neurology and neurosurgery, strategically placing shared administrative and support areas to enhance efficiency. In the neurology clinic, messages and graphics invoke a sense of strength. With help from imaginary friends, the patient becomes the hero of their story. In the neurosurgery center, patients grow into everyday heroes, ready to play an essential role in future adventures. These images follow them throughout the facility into their exam rooms and surgery centers. The uplifting tales, accentuated by vivid artwork, offer a positive distraction, alleviating the stress of treatment for the young patients.

The design team thoughtfully considered the space’s lighting, color, and graphic selections. Colors were chosen through color theory and with photosensitive patients in mind to prevent the triggering of seizures and foster a soothing and welcoming ambiance. We collaborated with patients, physicians, and caregivers to produce custom graphics and characters that embraced the diverse patient community. Graphics were thoughtfully scaled so they were not overpowering, and patients could engage with the characters by taking “selfies.” Naturally sourced materials such as linoleum flooring, epoxy terrazzo flooring, PVC-Free materials, and non-woven fabric were selected to reduce the overall carbon footprint and provide maximum durability and infectious control. Due to limited natural light, specialty lights were implemented throughout to mimic the outdoors.

The result is a bright and colorful space that is a welcoming distraction to young explorers and their families as they undergo treatment, giving them a sense of control and fun on their healing journeys.
