A strategic hire with international planning and design experience, Vangelatos hopes to expand HMC’s healthcare practice overseas
George K. Vangelatos, AIA, who has helped plan and design prominent healthcare facilities from California to the United Arab Emirates, has joined HMC Architects as a design director and principal.
As a member of HMC’s healthcare leadership and design team, Vangelatos brings his reputation for innovation to consult on healthcare projects throughout the western US while helping the company pursue additional healthcare facility planning and design work across the US and in the Middle East.
“George is a highly-regarded medical planner and designer. His recent experience as part of a design team for a large new medical center in Abu Dhabi will make him an important part of HMC’s continued growth,” said Jerry Eich, HMC’s healthcare practice leader.
While HMC is one of the most reputable designers of healthcare facilities on the West Coast, the firm is looking to expand its work across the US and overseas, particularly in countries that are seeking to build new healthcare facilities, such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. HMC is currently designing schools in Cairo and Saudi Arabia.
But while Vangelatos recently helped design Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Hospital, he has spent most of his architectural career designing projects for well-known US healthcare providers, including Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto; Children’s Hospital & Research Center in Oakland; Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco; Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport; Mercy Hospital’s Alex G. Spanos Heart and Vascular Center in Sacramento; Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose; and Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. He was also recently involved in a healthcare product design collaboration with Nuture by Steelcase.
Vangelatos earned a Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and completed graduate work at the Ecoles D’art Americans De Fountainbleau in France.
