The Southern California Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architecture (SoCal NOMA) honored HMC Architects with the 2023 Firm of the Year Award, underscoring our firm’s steadfast dedication to SoCal NOMA’s mission of increasing diversity in the profession. HMC’s unwavering commitment to delivering impactful work and services that positively impact the community has earned this recognition, a testament to a series of notable contributions and engagements.
In May, HMC LA hosted one of SoCal NOMA’s in-person general meetings and the Los Angeles and Ontario studios consistently participated in various events and meetings organized by the chapter. This active involvement underscores HMC’s eagerness to engage with and contribute to the organization’s activities.
HMC’s support extended to vital SoCal NOMA initiatives, including the “Close to the Edge: The Birth of Hip-Hop Architecture” exhibition, the SoCal NOMA Project Pipeline Architecture Summer Bootcamp, and the ACLA Design by Diversity block party. Beyond financial sponsorship, HMC took the lead in organizing recruitment efforts and school outreach for the SoCal NOMA Summer Bootcamp—a substantial and commendable endeavor. The firm also actively participated in the SoCal NOMA DEI Challenge, reaffirming its dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion within its practices.
In October, HMC’s Construction Administrator Carla Flagg, AIA, NOMAC, NCARB, was inducted into the NOMA Leadership Council. With a NOMA journey spanning over 30 years—from a student member to an active local and national executive board member and now a leadership council member—Flagg’s recognition reflects HMC’s sustained commitment to supporting NOMA’s initiatives.
As a firm HMC is committed to expanding opportunities in architecture for historically marginalized and underrepresented professionals. We are truly grateful for this wonderful recognition of our commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
