We’re gearing up for the AIA AAJ Fall Conference October 10-12, with a wide range of activities and opportunities for involvement planned. Browse the upcoming events and if you’re in Toronto for the conference, definitely stop by the AIA AAJ booth for a visit.
Re-purposing Existing Buildings for Essential Services Operations
Within the Law Enforcement track of the conference, which includes detention/corrections and courts, HMC’s Beverly Prior will be discussing the planning and design challenges of facing economic shortages as counties are choosing to re-purpose commercial buildings for essential services operations. This session will explore project development strategies, and the associated benefits and challenges for programming, operations, and security.
Sustainable Justice Workshop 2012: Turning Green Guide to Justice Principles into Practice
The committee had a fantastic turnout in Los Angeles last year and we’re looking forward to expanded involvement with Canadians this year! We will explore the advancement and application of Green Guide to Justice sustainable principles for facilities. Meeting together at the AAJ conference always presents the opportunity to engage new people, ideas, and perspectives for our committee’s goals: continued development of a rating system specific to justice facilities and its application; commitment to client outreach and stakeholder education; and public relations/advocacy for the future of sustainable justice.
Client Outreach
The Committee is also developing real “nuts-and-bolts” educational material specifically geared toward facility owners and operators and their concerns. The outreach focuses on viable implementation of specific sustainable principles, metrics, and measurable outcomes for design and operational solutions using precedent gleaned from successful justice facility design and operation across the country. The tools will include brochures and videos that can go viral and reach even beyond our current clients.
Three Minutes of Fame
Do you have 3 minutes and a story about sustainability you would like to share? We want to hear from you! During the conference we’re gathering project case study stories to integrate into a video project for our client outreach. The purpose is to increase industry facility and owner and operator awareness of successful sustainable justice principles in action. Look for us at the conference registration desk and sign up for a time to talk. No script is needed—just bring your ideas, editing will follow.
