The Coalition for Adequate School Housing (C.A.S.H.) is hosting their 35th annual conference February 24-26, 2014 and HMC’s Alex Parslow is presenting, “Take Control or Be Controlled – Maintaining Our Investment.” HMC’s Kevin Wilkeson is participating in panel titled, “You CAN Get There from Here! Transforming Existing Schools, One Step at a Time” and Lee Salin is a panel member on, “The Top 10 Ways You are Screwing Up Your Construction Program (and Probably Don’t Know It).”

Take Control or Be Controlled – Maintaining Our Investment
Presented by Alex Parslow, HMC Architects/School Advisors

Tuesday, February 25, 2014
2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Alex’s workshop will provide attendees with tools and best practices on how to communicate the worth of the maintenance department in this environment of draconian cuts. Terry Bradley, Past Chair of C.A.S.H., has said in maintenance that, “buildings cannot speak for themselves.” Clean, safe and well maintained schools improve results. Whether facing cuts, facing the results of cuts, or just trying to improve your department’s image, taking control of your image and advocating the importance of maintenance to achieve the district’s educational objectives can be deliberate. This workshop seeks to provide attendees with a specific plan, proven techniques and methods to be the voice on behalf of buildings for your district leadership and the community.

And, of course,  you must anticipate the moving target that is classroom technology! Join us as we hear from innovators in education about the inspiring facilities response to their educational program.

The Top 10 Ways You are Screwing Up Your Construction Program (and Probably Don’t Know It)
Panel: Mark Kelley, Ray, Winton & Kelley Law Firm; Lee Salin, HMC Architects; Heather Steer, Western Placer; Bill Savidge, SAB; Tom Millman, Kitchell

Wednesday, February 26, 2014
10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Listen to a facilities director, an architect, a construction manager and a lawyer describe the ten most common mistakes districts and their consultants make in planning and running construction programs—and how to prevent them. Using real-life examples, the speakers will cover topics including: how to coordinate the team, and what happens when you don’t; setting priorities and managing expectations; how to plan and report on expenditures; how schedules get set up to fail but can be fixed; why contracts matter and how to make them both strong and enforceable; procurement follies (2014 edition); litigation matters (aka documents, oh please have some documents); and the downhill slide to completion. Construction 101 and Construction 201, and a sense of humor, are suggested prerequisites.
