Innovation leader. Technology guru. Analytics wiz. Harvinder Singh is not your average architect. His current interests lie at the intersection of design and business, an area where analytical reality coexists with creative freedom. From the creative to the algorithmic, his contributions run the gamut of the art of architecture. Like a complete scale of musical notes, he performs in the complete range of his profession—turning data and insight into action, and connecting analytic results to business in a symphonic outcome. With an MBA and over 14 years of experience, he brings a key set of skills for achieving business objectives for HMC Architects.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
As part of the Senior Leadership at HMC Architects, Harvinder is a strong proponent of data based decisions in design. With his analysis tools and technology skills, he helped pioneer the tested Revit platform for its viability, long before it was widely accepted. And his contributions to HMC’s business are progressive and innumerable. He is a longtime member of the committee responsible for creating production standards for the firm. He also co-authored a BIM execution plan for firm-wide deployment, and introduced sketch-up for block diagrams, site analysis, and presentations long before the software became mainstream.

NOTABLE PROJECT
Harvinder was one of the youngest project managers to lead one of HMC’s largest design-build projects in Northern California. As project manager for the San Jose Convention Center Expansion and Renovation project, Harvinder handled all aspects of managing and delivering design for a $130 million LEED silver design-build project. In partnership with Populous, an architecture firm out of Kansas City, Harvinder led, supervised and facilitated design development of the project, managing a team of over 20 consultants. With a challenging schedule due to its design-build delivery model, some of the early bid packages had to be coordinated at lightning speed. But like grace under pressure, Harvinder mentored, led and motivated internal and external teams to stay committed to the goal and deliver excellent client service.

As a project manager, he was also responsible for HMC’s fiscal objectives on this project. The project booked record gross profit and generated strong professional ties to the city and Populous. His hard work on the project has led to future partnerships with Populous, and city officials also started recognizing HMC as a respectable local architectural design firm.

EXTRACURRICULAR
Harvinder volunteers his time designing play houses for the “Dreams Happen” fundraiser, benefiting “Rebuilding Together Peninsula,” a non-profit organization that rehabilitates low-income neighborhoods. He also volunteers his time working in the community kitchen of his local Sikh Temple. There, he sponsors families, and prepares and serves food at once a year to upwards of 4,000 people.

OFF THE CLOCK
As a wine enthusiast, Harvinder has his hopes set on one day becoming a master sommelier with his own wine label. He also speaks four languages (English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu) reasonably well. He’s still working on his French.
