Palomar College has welcomed the first students in its new bachelor’s degree program in Building Performance and Environmental Design, creating an affordable pathway to careers in architecture, interior design, and construction management.
HMC Architects is proud to support the program as a teaching firm, partnering with Palomar College and Sillman Architects to help connect classroom learning with professional practice. The firms provided input on the curriculum and learning environment, drawing on their experience in the design industry.
The program’s inaugural cohort of 24 students began classes in fall 2026 at Palomar’s Rancho Bernardo Education Center. The college’s first bachelor’s degree program prepares students to design and operate climate-responsive buildings by integrating architecture, interior design, sustainability, and environmental systems.
Students from multiple disciplines learn alongside one another, reflecting the collaborative nature of the building industry. During their final year, they will also have an opportunity to work on their senior projects in a professional office setting as part of the program’s mentorship model.
The program builds on Palomar’s associate degree offerings and expands access to a four-year education. According to the college, the degree costs approximately $15,000, providing students with an affordable option as they prepare to enter the profession.
HMC values the opportunity to support the next generation of design professionals and congratulates Palomar College and its inaugural cohort on this milestone.
