Each year, HMC holds an object making design competition amongst staff for the Leadership Award desk sculpture. Employees are encouraged to submit their design concepts for a desk sculpture no larger than 12″x12″x12″, that can be built for $250 or less and that celebrates HMC’s Leadership Award recipients. The Leadership Award recognizes HMC employees for significant efforts that exemplify the firm’s Guiding Principles and have a direct impact on the advancement of HMC, the industry or our communities.
Congrats to Jordan Cathey, HMC Ontario, whose design was chosen for this year’s Leadership Award sculpture! His design is a true representation of the Leadership Award and is comprised of six pieces: a concrete foundation and five 6” magnetic rods representing the five Guiding Principles. The sculpture is meant to be aesthetic but also encourage interactivity and creativity; the rods can be moved around and rearranged to build different shapes.
This award will be constructed through a three step process. First, the model will be 3D printed to create a master prototype. Second, the master prototype will be used to create a silicone mold. Finally, the silicone mold will provide a means to create the base of the sculpture using concrete. While each sculpture will remain the same in shape, the use of concrete allows for each piece to be unique from the rest.
The judging was tough with all the thoughtful and engaging entries from around the firm.
