HMC Architects is thrilled to announce that our Resilient Roots project received a Merit Award in the NEXT LA competition category at last night’s AIA LA awards ceremony. This prestigious recognition highlights the project’s innovative approach and community impact, embodying Black Americans’ resilience and the spirit of Allensworth, California.

Resilient Roots is an architectural endeavor and a testament to the community’s enduring strength and commitment to sustainability. The project addresses critical issues such as water scarcity and the reclamation of arsenic-laden soils, transforming these challenges into valuable community assets. It is a beacon of sustainable farming and resilience, demonstrating how adversity can be confronted with creativity and determination.

At its core, Resilient Roots aims to promote community well-being and growth by establishing an equity center providing self-sufficiency resources. The design team envisioned this initiative as a resiliency hub that celebrates the town’s rich history while fostering economic growth and empowerment for its residents.
