HMC Architects’ work on the Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Centers expansion in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles is featured in the Los Angeles Business Journal, highlighting an investment in access to behavioral health care across the county.
Designed by HMC, the 27,000-square-foot expansion will add 37 adolescent inpatient beds. The project will also allow Gateways to convert its existing adolescent beds to adult care, increasing its capacity to serve both populations.
“This project has been close to our hearts from day one,” said HMC principal-in-charge Andrea Ruelas. “The client team’s kindness has shaped the entire partnership, and we can’t wait to see it serve a community that needs it.”
The $60 million project is under construction, with Clayco serving as the general contractor. Completion is anticipated in the second half of 2027.
The Echo Park expansion is part of Gateways’ broader effort to strengthen services across the continuum of care, from inpatient treatment to residential and outpatient programs. For HMC, the project represents an opportunity to support a longtime community provider in expanding access to care for young people and families.
