Jimmy Macias is making it his mission to create exciting forms and spaces that not only oblige in its communities, but also seek to withstand time. He has worked closely with many of the industry’s top contractors and is an absolute pro when it comes to implementing projects from initial design to completion. With a passion for healthcare design, he has worked on some of HMC Architects’ largest healthcare projects and has quickly become the go-to resource for HMC’s healthcare studio. When it comes to selfless devotion for people, Jimmy is an alpha. He channels his tireless energy and optimism to inspire and help others. And he works hard every day to uphold the very same principles that helped establish the artistry and prestige for this profession.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Jimmy made his mark with The First People’s Hospital project in the Shunde District in Foshan, China, where his contributions to this project caught the attention of the industry and opened the doors for additional major international competitions in both healthcare and civic.

He thinks in terms of architecture as an opportunity to express dissimilar positions into an illustrative design scheme that blends a lucid impression of positive and negative spaces. To him, it’s entirely about integrating these elements into the resulting forms that work in harmony to express the client’s vision. His tireless efforts and attention to detail have produced impeccable results for clients such as Cleveland Clinic, Kaiser Permanente, Torrance Memorial Hospital, and San Antonio Regional Hospital.

NOTABLE PROJECT
As project designer on The First People’s Hospital project in Shunde, China, Jimmy worked directly with both HMC’s director of Asian markets and HMC’s healthcare lead principal. In conjunction with HMC’s partner firm in China, he co-led the design team from initial concepts through final delivery. During this project he traveled to China, and led a team of eight designers through a 2,400,000 square-foot project. The delivery and coordination of this massive build was accomplished through the inception of a system Jimmy developed and called “kit-of-parts.” He created it to allow the ability to scale their focus seamlessly from macro to micro. This helped integrate their design to best respond to the environmental conditions while also accommodating the local construction technology practices.

EXTRACURRICULAR
Jimmy has spent many hours outside of HMC as a volunteer assisting in the builds of homes and providing assistance to rural communities in Tijuana, Mexico. Specifically, he helped facilitate the non-profit, Corazon, with the installation of a public transportation shelter. This beautification project was designed to enhance the community’s identity and improve safety. Jimmy also has taken weekend trips through his church to Tijuana to deliver food, clothing and toys to the communities.

OFF THE CLOCK
Jimmy played Division II soccer in college and now studies Taekwondo with his two kids. He’s also an avid guitarist, and enjoys the crisp, acoustic sound of a flamenco guitar.
