For years, HMC Architects has been dedicated to supporting the American Stroke Association (ASA), a division of the American Heart Association (AHA), in its vital work to advance heart health. As part of our commitment to Design for Good, we believe that creating healthy communities starts with promoting well-being among our employee owners and project partners.
This year, we’re proud to deepen our partnership with the ASA as they strive to reach 100,000 workers by year’s end. We aim to amplify their message about the importance of acting F.A.S.T. in recognizing stroke symptoms and the critical role of secondary stroke prevention. With a stroke occurring every 40 seconds in the U.S., this mission has never been more urgent. Our firm has previously supported ASA initiatives such as Hard Hats with Heart, which are dedicated to creating a culture of health in the workforce, and we’re honored to support their current campaign to protect lives and promote health.
Today is World Stroke Day, and we’re sharing this important message with our employee owners to help them identify stroke signs and act when it matters most. Together, we’re working toward a healthier, stronger future for all.
Strokes can happen to anyone at any age. Globally, about one in four adults over the age of 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. Stroke is treatable mainly if you call 911 when you recognize the symptoms.
Learn how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T.
F: Face Drooping – —Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the smile uneven?
A: Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S: Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.“
T: Time to Call 911 – If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get to a hospital immediately. Check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared.
Test your knowledge of the stroke warning signs with the interactive F.A.S.T. experience.
Remember, if you see a drooping face, weakness in an arm, or difficulty speaking, call 911.
