The Kaiser Permanente Skyport Medical Office Building in San Jose, California has achieved LEED Platinum Certification.
Designed to extend healthcare services to the growing San Jose community, the four-story, 153,000 SF medical office building accommodates 100 providers. The building features specialized clinics including dialysis training, family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, orthopedics, imaging, laboratory, pharmacy, and optometry.
The project was originally designed with a goal to achieve LEED Gold Certification but, the team surpassed that goal to earn Platinum Certification by using various sustainable elements including dynamic tinting glazing, renewable energy, controllable thermal and lighting systems, cool roof, and heat island preventive paving. Drought tolerant and water wise landscaping were used throughout and helped the project attain a 50 percent reduction in potable water. Regional, low VOC, and “cradle to cradle” materials were used to provide safe and healthy air quality and create waste free systems. By employing a combination of active and passive strategies, Kaiser Permanente Skyport is 72 percent more energy efficient, reduced CO2 emissions by 47 percent, and achieved 40 percent water efficiency. This building will help Kaiser achieve its larger goal of becoming carbon neutral by the end of 2020.
