HMC signed on to the AIA 2030 Commitment in 2011 and has reported on our efforts to reduce energy and carbon emissions every year since our first report in 2014.

The AIA Commitment is an actionable climate strategy that gives us a set of standards and goals for reaching net zero emissions in the built environment. With the goal of carbon neutrality by 2030, the 2024 reporting year goal was an 80% reduction when compared to the 2003 CBECS database. In 2025, this goal steps up to a 90% reduction.  Firms are asked to report on their portfolio every year, and reports are due March 31.

This year, we submitted our 12th AIA 2030 report which included 134 projects, totaling more than 6.7M SF. We say some significant highlights, including:

  • Our average pEUI reduction was 69%, not quite the 80% goal that AIA put out, but a notable increase over the 62% from last year’s report. The 69% reduction is also notably better than the 50% industry average from the 2023 reporting year.
  • About 71% of our projects have energy modeling, a decrease from last year’s 80%, but worth noting that many of these projects are not modeled YET; they are in very early design phases, and energy modeling will be done as the design develops.
  • 67% of projects reported on embodied carbon, similar to last year’s 66%, Our project teams are encouraged to use C.Scale for early information on embodied carbon.

We are very proud of the work we’re doing to reach net zero emissions in the built environment and look forward to improving every year. With strategic design and transparent reporting, we believe we can create a greener future.
